Lighting

I came home today to find four boxes sitting in my vestibule. Which also reminded me, since I rarely use the front door, that I still have to paint the entrance way.
The boxes contained the new lamps I ordered to match the leaf/vine pattern of the mouldings. The fact that there were four boxes and all were the same size, small, was not lost on me. The lamps I ordered were two table top and two standing, which after seeing the boxes foretold of, "Some assembly required", not my favorite phrase.

Because the room is still a "work in process" (actually the entire house is), the work being done means, working on any one part of the building requires moving furniture, tools and supplies to another area of the room.

I assembled two lamps, one tall, one short and found they went together really easy and without any drama.
This was not the case with the replacement ceiling fixture I picked up at Home Depot. I wanted a different design fixture than the one that was already in place and I found two that had a pattern close to the lamp styles, unfortunately the depth these two lamps hung down meant that either the closet and vestibule doors remain shut or the lamp would only last until one of these doors was opened. I opened the box to install the fixture and found that the one item that holds the glass shade in place, the cap nut, was not included in the box, so that unit will be going with me tomorrow back to Home Depot.

Speaking of moving and storing furniture, if you look into the kitchen you will notice a living room recliner and laundry stacked. the kitchen table is pushed back against the stove. If you could see the dining room to the right....Well, You can't really walk into that room right now.

The table end visible to the right is a folding work table with all the plastering, sandind, and painting supplies on it. The item in photo center is a step stool.

Notice in the Kitchen the counter area is still in the old yellow paint, once the Living room is done, the dining room will be the next project, this counter joins the kitchen with that room.

For a quick idea of shifting tools, supplies, and junk around, the photo below is of the living room opposite the couch.

Wednesday night

My original idea for the mouldings at the stairwell were to connect with a 45 at the ceiling edge,( right side first photo below), run up the stairwell wall, across at the ceiling line, back down the opposite wall and have another 45 meet that would bring a moulding along the left side ceiling edge to meet the bevel cut at the Bannister side.

But after giving it a bit more thought I realized this would require some very funky cuts, because the stairwell walls are not square. Plus it would produce a complicated ugly box.

So after cutting in and mounting the final first floor moulding sections, I placed a moulding directly across the wall at ceiling height and attached it with a tack. A second piece was laid in place to finish the look.

I like the idea of this a lot better, it leaves a simpler cleaner look and gives sort of a reference point as to where the ceiling line ends.

The left wall, the ceiling, and the wall portion straight ahead require painting. The mouldings will wait until this is done to keep them from getting damaged.

Once this is done, the steps will be cleaned, sanded, replaced if necessary, and refinished. As with the floor below, the woodwork will not be re-stained, I like the patina. They will be sealed in a semi gloss, non reflective finish. the risers and ladders will receive new paint and every step requires re- caulking.

More paint

The north wall of the living room has received more paint. There are still some spots that require touch up. The wall behind the television as with the bannister uprights require scrubbing before painting can continue.

 Second coat applied to stairwell

Yes, that is the Stig using public transport.

Moulding continues along ceiling, small bevelled piece awaiting railing supports being scrubbed and the area painted before being placed.

Up the stair case

Far wall awaiting more paint

Mouldings pre-cut, sitting at window awaiting wall paint.

Mouldings at kitchen entrance in place, narrow entrance lip required a thinner moulding design

Miter Box awaits mouling work.

Thin and thick moulding run, stain mark painted over since photo.

Small stain awaits correction. Large mark on wall was actually on camera lens.

Fireplace end of room.

Finding out the hard way.

"I heard you last night".  These were the first words out of my uncles mouth this morning. In case you are not aware of it, My uncle lived in a mobile home park. He finally decided the trailer maintenance was a bit much to keep up with and made arrangements to move to an assisted living complex. Being 85 years old, while he is still mobile and still drives, working on a building was getting to be a bit much. He contacted a facility in Groton and they told him he was on the top of the list and should be moving in around late July. He placed his Mobile Home up for sale (late June). In the middle of July he sold the trailer with the agreement with the new owners he would be out by August 1st. The last week of July rolled in and the assisted living facility told him, "Oops". So having no where to go, he moved in with me, right now it looks like it will be October before he can get into the facility, (hopefully by then).

Anyway, I, as you know am working on the house. I gave him my first floor (finished) bedroom. I moved back upstairs to the heat and squalor. With everything I have left to do and everything I want to get done, my head fills with lists of what to do when I go home. The problem is, when I get out of work, I am tired (boredom) and in no mood to jump on those things I plan to do. I usually eat supper, do laundry, sit back watch a movie and relax. Sometimes a unexpected nap arrives. I usually get energy and motivation once that is done. Oft times, I start working at around midnite. Last night was no different, I did the white paint trim work, ran the moldings as far as they would go before having to deal with the next wall. I mopped up the floor in the area I was going to work and installed the blinds and curtain rod fixtures.  Here's a note, curtain rods, for some reason, it appears, are mostly made in China, while they look pretty good and the parts go together easily and are sturdy, the hardware they give you absolutely sucks. The screws it would seem are made of tin and when they come in contact with wood the heads strip right out.

Anyway, I guess he's not used to hearing power tools between 1 and 2 in the morning.

because there aren't enough places for me to fall asleep

Currently I have a recliner couch in the living room that gets moved back and forth as we work around it. There is a recliner in the kitchen stuffed up against the kitchen table which is stuffed up against the stove because we are working in the living room. So last night I decided to get another recliner, it will be delivered today, into the middle of the living room, into the middle of the battlefield. It should be OK though, most of the sloppy type work is done, just trim, touch up and the staircase walls. The good thing is, when the room is done, there will be instant crash areas for six people, everyone relined, everyone unconscious.

Awaiting some additions

Two of these will be arriving tomorrow later today. I should be picking them up on my way home from work.

In four to six weeks new lamps for the living room should be arriving. It took a while to find a leaf/vine pattern that you can actually get, and as it is, they will not be available for a month or month and a half.
There will be two of each, the table lamps on the new tables at either end of the couch. The floor lamps for the recliners on the opposite side of the room.

Another wall...

Did a little more living room work, at 3am Sunday morning I got the sanding done, including the areas that were painted over, also applied a base coat of paint on the repaired areas.. Last night I put the second coat on the long living room wall.

I put down a coat of the white paint we used on the ceiling, on the inner wall baseboard. Absolutely ugly. I have decided to paint the room trim on the same trim paint that was used in the bedroom, it is wheat, sort of a antique white. It will go along the baseboards and around the doors and windows.

When the trim is done the moldings will be put on the long wall. This will leave both the inner and outer staircase walls. Two steps still need to be replaced and the risers painted.

I ordered two new end tables for the couch wall, they are scheduled to be picked up after work on Wednesday. I am currently looking for a couple lamps for the end tables.

With my right arm out of commision due to tendonitis...

I made a call and borrowed a right arm, luckily for me it came with a left arm, a body, two legs and a brain. Reuben came by, removed the storm window and installed the AC unit in the living room that has lived in its box in the back seat of my car for a week and a half.

As far as what I can do left handed, not much, I did stain some of the living room trim. Problem is, I really cant do much with the trim until the painting gets done.

Hey, it beats watching television.
