Stair case

Easier said than done. I thought I hit paydirt when I found pre-made treads and risers, I thought it would be a simple matter of cutting the length and dropping them in, this...is not the case. The original treads are tongue and grove in the back...

And the front moulding lip, which on the original treads are separate items and sit back a couple inches...

Are different from the new treads which have a glued on moulding lip right at the edge

The lip will either have to be cut off and a separate piece added, or a different tread will have to be used. Just cutting the back of the treads and placing the trim against the riser would leave the new steps shorter than the original ones.

this would not be good for negotiating in the dark.

The other thing I found is that the stair stringers themselves were not designed to be at the angle they are used in this house. It was meant for a longer, less angled stairway. this meant that they used shims to compensate for the angle between the stringer and the tread.
