Possible way around

I am going to do some measuring tonight, the idea is to cut the tongue groove off the rear riser leaving a 1 inch deep slot for the tread to push into.

Doing this should make it possible to bring the tread face even to where it should be to match the existing stairs.

What this will do though is leave a gap between the existing riser and the face moulding, but won't decrease the treads surface area.

The gap I can fill by placing the new (included in tread kit) riser in front of the existing riser which will fill the gap.

The only draw back is the tread below aill lose about 3/4 to 1 inch on the back side.
